If you don't know what "fertility rates" are, it refers to the average number of children born to a group.
There are people freaking out that certain populations are having fewer children. Who? Well:
- People who want more taxpayers around to support the government-run ponzi schemes like Social Security
- Government agencies (and their unions) that rely on saying they need to serve children in order to keep their funding
- Businesses that sell a lot of overpriced, quickly consumed or outgrown stuff for children
- Businesses that "serve" children, such as day orphanages
- Racists who are afraid the "wrong" people will outnumber their descendants
1) Because they can. A lot of people used to have children or more children because they were a natural result of sex. But now we have effective and lawful ways of preventing conception (contraception) and to kill any human beings we do conceive. So now people can have lots of sex without ever having to deal with a live, born baby.
2) Fewer people follow a religious command to have (many) children/avoid contraception. Even if they belong to a religion that tells them these things, they ignore or toss aside the pressure to have a lot of future tithe payers - er, uh, children.
3) Children have been turned into liabilities instead of assets. When more of us lived on farms, or had family businesses, and could put kids to work at very early ages, including in factories, children were contributing materially to the household at early ages. Now, they're financial drains to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars each, often dependent into their mid-20s or later, and most will never work for our family business, which most of us do not have anymore. They can also get us sued with their reckless actions. We can hire people - professionals - to take care of us when we get old, especially if we haven't put a kids through college.
4) Having children invites more government intrusion into your life. Nosy neighbors and relatives, mandated reporters like teachers, etc. will take a bruise, which is a normal thing for kids to get, or take their own delusion or spite and can report you as a possible abuser to the authorities. Now you've got to deal with intrusions into our private life.
5) They like their life the way it is. Having children changes everything. Your career, your home, your sex life, your sleep patterns, your friendships, your finances, your time, your freedoms, what you eat, the entertainment and recreation you enjoy, even the vehicle you drive, and so many other things are changed if you have children. Children change everything and mean much more uncertainty.
6) They aren't rooted. These days, in pursuing a career, people often have to move relatively frequently. Some people don't want to subject children to that. See the next point.
7) They don't consider themselves financially prepared to be parents. Fewer and fewer people get jobs with good compensation and keep working in the same place for the same company for their entire career. It takes people longer to graduate with college degrees, longer to pay off student loans, longer to get professionally and financially established. Kids cost more to raise now. Expensive technology, birthday parties, day orphanages (daycare), private schooling, tutoring, organized activities, etc. In a lot of places, gone are the days kids could entertain themselves, especially by walking or riding a bike to a friend's house. Now they need to be dropped off at school, picked up at school, taken to practice or rehearsals or whatever, on and on it goes.
8) Fewer people feel comfortable with the culture in which they'd be raising children. People now know there are child molesters (at least the convicted ones) living in their neighborhood. They know they can't really control the media to which their children will be exposed, and that the kids can easily access everything from ISIS torture-murder videos to extreme fetish porn. We don't live our entire lives in the same homogeneous towns where everyone is the same religion and values are in common.
9) People are more aware of everything that could "go wrong" with having a child. When I was a kid we rarely heard of kids who were so "special needs" that they would never be independent adults. Now it seems like there's a good chance of that happening to someone we know, if not ourselves.
10) Leftist loons are afraid people are killing the planet. They fear overpopulation and large carbon footprints. Don't ask me how having fewer children squares with their demand for more government ponzi schemes. I guess they plan on continuing to import more and more labor, because who cares if those other countries can't sustain their ponzi schemes?
11) People are not confident they have the right partner or that the relationship will last. Most marriages fail. That's a fact. People are more aware of that now. Having a child with someone means being willing to deal with that person as an ex-spouse co-parent.
12) Men are now punished for being fathers. Refer back to point three. Men used to have children who were taken care of by the wife in younger years, and then became sidekicks/employees to him early in childhood. Now kids are perpetual accessories to Mom, she makes them her priority over her him, and they will be weaponized against Dad when Mom thinks it serves her. Men are still generally expected to be the main financial provider, yet are also now pressured to somehow be present and involved as if they were stay-at-home-mothers. Fathers are no longer respected like they used to be. Becoming a father means having even less control over your own life. Men know they could lose their children and yet be forced to pay child support, including child support far above what it actually costs to raise a child, for 20+ years.
Want more people to have children? Want people to have more children? You'll have to change a lot of what life is like now. Good luck with that.
